What brand and model of flute should I buy?
I have been playing for 4 and a half years, going into High School. I have a student armstrong which is a bad quality and not a good sound. I want my new flute to have the following things:
1. B-Foot
2. Sterling Silver Head, Body, and Foot
3. Good Quality
4. French Keys
5. 14 K. White Gold Springs
6. Not An Emerson…(Bad luck with them…)
7. Not Over $2,500 (If Possible…)
8. Open-Holed With Pads
9. In-Line G
10. C# Trill Key
I know a little about buying flutes, but I don’t know which brands are best. I am not liking Yamaha’s too much because I can’t get a good sound. I am also looking to get a professional model, it has been recommended that I skip an intermediate model.
AZUMI 3000. Theses are the TOP recommendation of all the top flute teachers in the US right now. You can go to www.fluteworld.com and check them out. You can also compare to similar models of Altus (who makes this flute!), DiMedici, Yamaha, Pearl, Trevore James, etc. I am sorry that you have not had good luck with Memerson – I have had VERY good luck with those that I had my students get over the years.
NOW – your list of requirements is GREAT – except – I would VERY STRONGLY suggest that you get an offset G key. As you imporve and go farther ( and a new flute WILL inspire you!!) then you will find that an inline G WILL start to tire your left wrist – and cause you to make all kinds of compensating adjustments that will not CURE this, but will transfer the pain to ANOTHER part of you hands, neck, etc
Honey, whatever the companies call them you ARE buying an intermediate flute, or a step-up. A professional flute runs at least 8 to 10 grand and up, and are names that do not eve MAKE student models. Do not be swayed by fancy MODEL names, or categories – go with the list you have above, and the MAKER”S REPUTATION. As you move up from what you have ( ooh – ick!!) to a much better flute, the CUT of the embouchure is going to be quite different – no, you will NOT get a great sound the first day! Students flutes are cut to make one lovely, easy, plain-vanilla sound, and not much in the way of dynamics, either. Better flutes are cut with more resistance – you need better flexibility and control, but you GAIN in more dynamic levels, and FAR more possible tone colors. When *i* was first told about *tone colors* I was puzzled – my flute made ONE FLUTE SOUND – pretty, but ONE. Then I got a GREAT flute – and WOW – I went from primary colors to the Crayola 64 Box!
I am going to the Flute Convention this summer in NYC, and intend to go HOG WILD, playing all kinds of flutes – although I have the professional flute of my dreams (a really good Muramatsu). This is a great way to try flutes – but you can have GOOD flute dealers send you a couple to try. I really hope that a private teacher is helping you with this!
