Spray Towle
my new parakeets fluffed up?
i bought a new parakeet today got home about 1:30 made sure everything was set up then put it in the cage everything was fine it didnt move much unless i did sumthin in the cage the person at the pet store i bought it from said to use a towle at first when i hold it and i did(im regretting that now) and i held him for bout an hour(till 4:00) then he moved some ate some spray millet a diff treat i had in there but now all he does is sit down in the middle of my cage puffed up
and it wont fly up to the perches and stuff in the cage ever and the hanging toys it flew when i set it down on my couch but it looks like a small blue hen layin eggs now please somone help me!!!
I probably wasn’t a good idea to hold him for an hour, but it’s done now. He’ll get used to things in no time. he was probably just shaken up by the car ride, cardboard box, new cage, new sounds, and being held for an hour. like I said, He’ll be fine. I you want to hold it, you should train it to know your hand. Here’s how.
you have to be extremely gentle. I would start out in a small room, such as a bathroom. Sometimes it helps to play soft music quietly in the back round. I don’t suggest starting to train while you bird is molting.
1 try to put your hand in the cage, but don’t touch him. if he flies away, try again in about 10 min. repeat until he doesn’t fly away.
2 the next day, or week, when he is comfy with you hand in the cage, start stretching it around and opening and closing it.
3 after he is comfortable with #2, probably about a day, and doesn’t fly away, hold a small perch in your hand and move it towards him. if he flies away, try again in a few min.
4 after he is comfortable with that, move the perch rite above his feet, and say step up, wile gently pushing up on his abdomen. he should step up hold him there a few min. then put him back on his solid perch and leave him alone. this shows him that this thing really isn’t so bad, and that it is safe to sit on.
5 next, after doing step 4 for about a day, every 15 min or so, get a short perch, about as long as your finger, and hold it with your finger on top, do step 4.
6 then do it w/o the perch. gradually move out of the cage, out of the room, to a different floor, until he is OK with it all. I wouldn’t keep I longer than 5 min. out of his cage. the next day, add a min. to get it up to 6 min. next day, 7. animals need this gradual adjustment. it may seem to be taking forever, but he needs that. In the end, I wouldn’t keep him out for more than a few hours without a break.
Good luck with your new friend! Always be gental with it. I you get fursterated with it, it is time to put him in his cage for a while. Don’t do anything you’ll regret. Have fun!
