Is it ok to give a 4 month old a spoon of orange juice for his cold?
My baby is sneezing and caughing, he doc wouldnt give him any medicine, can I give him olive oil or oj…please advise
It’s tough to listen to your baby cough and sneeze, but there really isn’t any medication that you can give to a baby that young for cold symptoms. None of it is effective, and some of it can be dangerous.
Orange juice would be bad for your baby. Acid foods like citrus and tomatoes should never be given to babies under a year – their tummies can’t handle the acid and it will lead to reflux and spitting up and generally make the cold problem worse. I would also be worried that olive oil could really damage your baby’s lungs if he got it down his windpipe. Since your baby is only four months old, he’s not very good at swallowing spoonfuls yet and inhaling it by mistake could be a real possibility. OJ or olive oil would not provide any benefit anyway.
But there are things you can do to help. A cool mist humidifier is an excellent investment (I really like the animal-shaped ones by Crane – they are quiet and easy to adjust). You can also put a pillow under his mattress to give him an incline to sleep on so that gravity will help drain the congestion away from his nose. Be sure to put the pillow under the mattress – don’t put it on top or it will increase the risk of crib death. You can also use a swing or a bouncer to help your baby sleep in an upright position.
Finally, saline drops and nasal suction will help clear his respiratory passages. Get regular 0.9% saline drops or mist from the pharmacy (I really liked using the Simply Saline Baby mist – it was easier to use than the drops). You can also make your own saline solution at home (add 1 tsp salt to 1 cup water – you can boil the water for 10 min, then cool if you like), but it might just be more convenient to buy something with an applicator. Put a couple drops in each nostril, wait 10-15 seconds, then suction out his nose with the aspirator. Do this when he wakes up, when he goes down for a nap, and whenever you’re feeding him.
