Silverware Spoon
At what age did your toddler start using silverware?
My son is 14 months and I know he’s not there yet, but he still has interest in trying to feed himself with a spoon. What’s the general age where children usually start spoon/fork feeding themselves? Just curious to hear other’s experiences…
My daughter has been “using” a Baby Fork or spoon at some meals since about 11 months. Its more just for exposure at this point , really. I just would offer one at mealtimes so she would be able to play with it and understand what it was for and she would watch us eat and imitate. Sometimes she eats her meal or part of her meal with the spoon or fork, and then gets impatient and decides to ditch it and just go at it with her hands. Sometimes she insists on using the spoon, even if she doesnt manage to get food on it. She’ll just dip it in her plate and then bring it to her mouth. I think she just likes to do it because we do. It’s cute. 14 months is pretty young and I wouldn’t expect your son to use a utensil consistently but if you dont mind a bit of a mess from time to time, just offer him one at meals since he is showing an interest and let him play with it.
