Silver Salad Fork

why are the knife and spoon on the right side of a plate and the fork on the left?
When you set the table the knife and spoon are together on the right side of the plate and the fork is on the left side< or this is the way I am told it is suppose to be set up
Why is this so ? Where is the napkin suppose to go? what about any other silver ware or plates like salad bowel or cups ?
It depends where you are, in Europe we don’t have salad bowls, we can afford to eat meat. drinking glasses are ALWAYS on the right not the left, the smallest for white wine followed by one slightly larger for red and then the water glass, they run from left to right The serviette or napkin as you call them is placed either in the water glass or on the side plate to the left. The spoon for soup is on the right as is the knife or knives and the fork or forks on the left. The fork is held in the left hand and not changed over, the Dessert Fork and spoon is at the top with the spoon upper most. At a formal dinner, soup is first, followed by fish then the main then cheese then dessert.
