Serving Tablespoon
Pls help with serving size for my 1 year old?
I just want to know how much food I should serve my 1 year old at every meal/in a day. I am always worried that I may not be feeding him enough or that I feed him too much.. well I am more worried that I may not be feeding him enough because a lot of the time, for example, he’d only eat like a spoon of cereal or a fruit cup or something else and he is already done for a few hours which I find very weird. Like how much food is considered ok at every meal time? in a day to serve my child… if possible, can you pls give me an example of what you give your child in a day (eg: 4 oz of milk, 1 yogurt, 1 slice of cheese, 2 tablespoon of mashed potato and so on). My baby is not gaining weight at all that’s why I am getting concerned. His ped always says that he is fine, that if he is hungry, he’d eat; if he is thirsty then he’d drink, but sometimes my baby can go for hours without wanting anything and sometimes only eating tiny bit of food in a day, I try many different kinds of food too
I agree with your ped.
Your baby is SMART. If he’s hungry, he’ll eat. Babies don’t eat more if they had a bad day. Babies don’t eat less because they broke up with someone–babies eat when and if they are hungry.
Your job is to offer him healthy foods, his job is to eat what his body tells him to eat. A serving size is about a tablespoon–and that’s not a lot. Babies don’t need a lot of food. Offer a tablespoon of whatever you’re eating, i.e., chicken and rice, or soft veggies. If he wants it, he’ll eat it.
This is the time where they begin to lose some of the baby fat they’ve been storing. My first went from 50% on the growth charts to 5% at his 1 year because he’d started running (not just walking.) By the next appointment, he was back at 50%. You don’t have to stress! As long as he’s happy and has the chance to graze all day, he’ll be just fine.
It’s more helpful to think of what he eats over a week.
He might not touch food one day, and then two days later he might eat his weight in carrots and yogurt.
Trust your smart baby, follow his cue. Start with small portions and if he devours them and asks for more, give him more!
