oxidized Silver Jewelry okay for sensitive skin?
My skin breaks out in rashes when I wear certain types of metal.
I was planning to buy a Silver Plated ring with an “antique” or oxidized finish.
Although I don’t have reactions with silver, the ring is silver plated. Will the oxidized finish give me a rash?
(Also, one of the customers who bought the product reported that the ring turns her finger green. Is this due to skin sensitivity or is it just the finish? The seller has a good reputation for quality products. )
If you have a tendency toward metal allergies–never, and I mean NEVER, purchase a plated piece whether it is plated with silver or gold if you are going to wear the piece next to the skin as with a ring.
What you are purchasing is a base metal ring with an incredibly thin layer of silver/Gold Plated over it. The plating will wear through relatively quickly, particulary on a ring. Once your skin is exposed to the base metal, your chances for a reaction due to a metal allergy is very high. Most base metals used in jewelry contain Nickel, which depending on the source you believe, causes an allergic reaction in five to fifteen percent of the general population.
You should also be careful when purchasing Sterling Silver jewelry from Mexcio. Often Mexican Sterling is plated with Nickel to help prevent tarnishing/oxidation. People have an allergic reaction to the nickel plating, completely unaware that there is nickel present and assume they are allergic to the sterling.
Just a word to the wise. . . since you have had some allergic reactions to metals in the past, you should be careful to not wear jewelry to bed irregardless of the metal content. Many people develop additional metal allergies through their lives and often do not realize it until they’ve worn a piece to bed and had an allergic reaction while they’ve slept. This nighttime reaction can be quite severe before the wearer wakes up. Be particulary careful to not wear pierced earrings to bed unless you have to to keep the piercings open.
