Many of the participants of the pre-civil war Utopian communities were solicited to join because they could help financially back the community; therefore they came from wealthier families that could afford at least a servant or two to do all the labors that they did not want to do. The Utopian societies required all participants to work for the common good. Many came in thinking that they wouldn’t mind the work, then they got their fill over the hard labor and left taking their financial backing with them. The communities eventually failed because they had not enough participants or money to keep them going.
