what is the best way to potty train a 9 week old German Shepherd??
I just got a 9 week old german shepherd. It ismale, all black with brown paws and a little gray on the chest. It is not potty trained yet. He is a house dog for now, but eventually I want him to live in my backyard. (Big backyard about 1,000 sq. ft.) What is the best way? When should I start having him sleep outside? Please help me. I want him to be a good doggy =)
First go you your pet store and buy a puppy potty.
Second undo your puppy’s nappy and place it aside.
Now place your puppy on the potty and wait.
In other words, NO-ONE “potty trains” a puppy!
You want to “house train” or “toilet train” it.
So start with a well-raised puppy, one that has always had plenty of room so that it can leave the sleeping pile and get well away to go toilet.
WATCH your puppy, and as soon as it starts giving “I need to go toilet” signals you pick it up and carry it to the designated toilet area. (If you scare it so that it piddles on you, tough – you can clean up later.)
Once there, put it down and wait silently.
When it obliges, praise & reward it – the reward can be a rub or a tidbit or a game. The praise must include the pup’s name and your “toilet” word – whether that be “toilet” or “carrots” or something else (I prefer plain English).
Call it back inside.
The times you can almost guarantee that it will want to go toilet are:
• 1 minute after waking.
• 3 minutes after eating/drinking.
The commonest signal is trotting in an anxious circle with its nose to the floor.
If you are unobservant and it starts before you get there, STAMP on the floor and yell “NO !!” before you pick it up.
Dogs have no aversion to piddles and poos, so the old fashioned “rub its nose in it” works only because the pup recognises your dispsleasure – and you can express that displeasure without a physical battle.
At times when no-one can watch the pup (eg, everyone is sleeping) he should be in the security pen you built inside the well-fenced back yard (fenced not just to keep him IN but to also keep OUT stray dogs and stray brats). The run should be at least 12 feet long between the gate and the raised sleeping box, width probably 3½-4 feet. The whole thing should be roofed to ensure that the pooch cannot climb out and also to provide both shade and keep the rain off. In there the pup can bounce around to exercise its muscles, can piddle & poo without needing to lie in the results, can experience the scents & sounds & movements of the environment and – when those get boring – can gnaw on the bone (such as part of an oxtail or sheep’s spine) you provide when you put it in there with its meal. That bone not only relieves boredom, it also exercises the cheek muscles that help erect the ears, helps remove deciduous teeth, and helps the permanent teeth break through the gum.
Ignore the “advice” to “crate train” . Crates cannot train anything – they cannot reward good behaviour, they cannot reprimand misbehaviour. It is common for people to report that it took until their pup was 8 months old to become “crate trained”, whereas I expect a pup to be house clean right from the start.
What usually happens with crated pups is that the pup cries anxiously because it wants to get away from its nest to go toilet, it can’t, and nor can it wait until YOU bother to wake up several hours later, so it is FORCED to mess in its own nest, thereby destroying its instinctive cleanliness.
Not even my 13 year old has been in any of my 3 crates (unless you count the trip inside her dam, flying home from the stud). A crate is useful for separating dogs from visitors for a few minutes, and essential for when flying them around the country. My dogs are quite fond of lying under my desk, because it forms a 3-sided “cave” (which is why many dogs choose to go into their crate for a snooze), and because when they sleep in the passageway (my bedroom is verboten, even though the door is always open) I tend to trip over them when I’m rushing to the loo without turning a light on.
