Paying thousands of dollars just to write a dissertation?

Ok, you go to a school in the UK, working towards your MPhil or PhD. These degrees are research based and all effort is being spent on the thesis. Then why do you pay tuition if you’re not taking classes? All you are doing is writing a huge paper and reporting to your thesis advisor a few times a week.

The school I am looking at is 8000 pounds sterling for tuition, roughly about 16 grand in American dollars. Where is that money going towards? a piece of paper that says Masters of or Doctor of?
a PhD or any doctorate to me is valuable, I just want to know where my money is going since I wouldnt be taking classes

I don’t know about UK but in North America (US,Canada), students engaged in Masters/PhD research, particularly in science and engineering, are usally paid a stipend that covers their living expenses. You don’t get rich but it’s more than enough to live on.
The purpose of a graduate degree is to do independant research, not to take courses. You should be careful who you choose to work for to make sure you get adequate support for your research.
If you believe a PhD is just a peice of paper than it’s probably not something you should pursue.
