Large Oval
What tree looks like a magnolia sort of?
I live in Jacksonville,FL and I see these beautiful trees in the parks and such. They have shiny, large, oval leaves like a Magnolia tree but I’m sure they aren’t the southern magnolia because their branches are long but not clustered and the leaves are not clustered. Does this tree sound familiar?
I have not noticed any flowering from these trees for many summer-autumn months.
Loblolly bay (Gordonia lasianthus) is sometimes mistaken for southern magnolia. It is common in Jacksonville and has large white flowers. Take a look at it at this site:

Sweetbay magnolia (Magnolia virginiana) is a cogener of southern magnolia and is also common in and around Jacksonville. The underside of the leaf is usually white or light grey. Here is a site on it:
