Germany Silver
When did an eagle become the symbol for Germany or Deutscland?
I have an old European Silver watch FOB of the Deutschland Eagle and I am trying to date it. I believe it dates the mid 1930′s but is possibly older.
The eagle is a very ancient symbol. The Holy Roman Empire claimed its linage is continuous with that of the Roman Empire which used the symbol of the eagle. Germanic tribes also saw the eagle as symbol of the Norse God Odin. The double headed eagle was formalised as the crest of the Holy Roman Empire by Emperor Sigismund. in 1433. All this means having a eagle per se will not really help you date your watch. However, if you go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms_of_Germany you can try to see which of the prevalent renditions match that on your watch.
