Is the EU trying to be like the UK?
I’ve always maintained that the Franco-German Empire aka Common Market then EEC, now EU) is only trying to be what the UK has been for centuries, no border controls, a single head of State, a single currency, and a common language they will haggle over…(French or German?).
Ted Heath took the United Kingdom so much for granted he forgot what it truly was I’m sure.
Should we exit the pathetic EU and consider allowing them to join the UK so long as it’s on our terms?
Allegiance to the Crown, learn English, adopt sterling, drive on the left….stop eating frogs and Horses………your thoughts?
Unfortunately, no.
Traditionally the UK was a free country, ruled not only (or mainly) by the Parliament and government, but by a multitude of smaller units: towns and cities had their own councils, the Commission of the Peace was locally based and appointed magistrates, the police were similarly accountable not to national government, but to the authorities of their own area. The universities largely ran themselves, as did the medical and legal professions. All these authorities had strictly limited powers, and what was not explicitly forbidden by law was legal.
In contrast, most Continental countries had (and have) a centralising, top-down constitution. The citizen’s right to choose his own actions is strictly limited; the State has a preeminent claim to dictate what shall and shall not be done.
The trend, I fear, is not in the direction we might choose. Especially (but not only) under this government the state has encroached more and more on our freedoms. Since 1997 more than 3,000 acts have been passed, every one of which in some way infringes our liberty. There is even an act in force which allows the government to create legislation without laying it before Parliament, and even without telling anyone in advance.
You will have guessed by now that I agree with one of your suggestions. Leave the EU now, and begin the slow process of recovering our freedom.
