Bowl Dish
Puppy won’t eat from dish, but will eat when food is on the bare floor?
My wife and I got a new puppy about 2 weeks ago (almost 14 weeks old now). So far everything’s going fine in terms of housebreaking, play, etc, but the one thing I can’t seem to figure out is his eating habits.
He won’t eat the food from his dish, but if I scoop a little onto the floor next to the dish, he’ll eat it. Also eats from my hand, and only really eats from the dish late at night when he’s really hungry. We’ve tried to avoid feeding him via the floor and via hand for 1 day, and then it resulted in him barely eating anything at all.
I’ve also tried 3 different bowls/dishes. Tried washing each with dishsoap, and also without soap (just really Hot Water). I’ve only succeeded once in getting him to eat from the dish, after washing the dish without soap, but the next day I tried the same thing and he wouldn’t eat from the dish again.
Any ideas? We want to be strict with his diet, and would prefer not to chop up meat or egg into his meals. Thanks.
Leave the bowl out with food in it. Make sure he knows where it is, and always keep fresh water available. Don’t worry about him “starving” — dogs are smarter than that. He’ll eat from the dish when he’s ready.
Alternately, go ahead and continue letting him eat from the floor. What’s the harm in it?
